Brice Berry Umstead passed away peacefully on July 7th, 2024 at Park West Hospital from liver failure. He leaves three children Katie Vandergriff (David Vandergriff) of Powell, TN, Scott Umstead of Knoxville, TN, and Myla Williams of Franklin, TN. He relished his role as grandpa to Maranda, Elisa, and Houston Vandergriff, Miciah Umstead, and Ryan and Christian Williams and he hoped to teach at least one of them enough fishing skills to be able to use their lifetime Tennessee hunting and fishing licenses he gifted them all at birth.
Brice spent 43 years serving his country in the U.S. Navy and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. Brice has sailed around the world and as a sailor, he was seasick every day, but he persevered just like everything in his life. He gave of himself whether it was teaching Ham Radio to Boy Scouts, or delivering Christmas baskets to those in need, he lived a life of service to others. He will be missed by many.
He was called many names in his 86 years: Coach, Chief, Dad, Sir, Farmer, Catfish, but his favorite was “Grandpa” by many kids who knew and loved him. Whether it be coon hunting, growing tomatoes, or fishing, he tried to instill his love for nature’s glory into future generations.
Brice loved music and could play by ear after hearing a song only once. He played his guitar across East Tennessee on stages in local joints, senior centers, veteran’s hospitals, campgrounds, and heritage events ranging from Mule Days in Columbia to Old Timers days at Norris Dam. He enjoyed performing with many bandmates and his longtime beloved partner, Imogene Cox.
Brice never met a dog he didn't like. He had many and loved them all. He leaves behind a thriving garden, several music performance groups missing a talented guitar player, and many friends whom his generosity and sense of humor have touched.
Not surprisingly, Brice requested no fuss, no obituary, and no service. Also, not surprisingly, his family and friends plan to disregard his selfless request by sharing with friends, writing this obituary, and planning a celebration of life, which will also include military honors, on a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in memory of Brice to the Down Syndrome Awareness Group of East Tennessee at www.dsagtn.org or DSAG-TN, P.O. Box 53575, Knoxville, TN 37950
