Helen Abernathy

Helen Marie Abernathy, 95, formerly of Loudon, passed away September 22, 2016. She was one of 12 children born to John Robert Hooker and Minnie Brooks Hooker, of Loudon. Helen married Sam Abernathy in November 1941 and they had one daughter, Sandra. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Helen enjoyed cooking her signature southern dishes, all things outdoors (especially fishing and golf), and had a special connection with animals, both wild and domestic. Helen and Sam lived in several cities while Sam pursued his career, including Baltimore MD, Fort Worth TX and finally, Manchester TN, where they lived until retirement. Helen had many hobbies but none more challenging and rewarding as her "ham" radio. She was able to reach the pinnacle of this skill and made many friends worldwide through her communications. Finally after the death of her husband, Helen spent the remainder of her years in Naples FL with her family. She is preceded in death by her husband Sam; her daughter, Sandra Taylor, and the following seven brothers and sisters, Louise Caldwell, Kenneth Hooker, Norman Hooker, Pearl Jenkins, Raymond Hooker, Margaret Ruth Hooker, and Buddy Hooker. She is survived by brothers and sisters, Robert Hooker (Joyce), Mary Jane Copeland (Gene), Martha Ann Johnson (Gene), and Doug Hooker (Imogene-deceased); as well as her grandchildren, Rodney Nettles and Steve Nettles; and one great grandchild, Sam Nettles (Steve's son). Family will receive friends Thursday, 12:00 - 1:00 pm with the funeral service to follow at 1:00 pm. Dr. Dick DeMerchant will officiate. Interment at Corinth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the American Cancer Society or a preferred similar organization so we may one day cure the disease that has affected so many.
